The purpose of the feedback below is to identify knowledge gaps that may affect students’ preparation for research activities. We summarize the student feedback and provide the raw survey data below for transparency.
Survey responses from first- and second-year graduate students, who were preparing the preliminary exam (equivalent to qualifying exam at other institutions), suggest that students felt moderately prepared by their undergraduate coursework for graduate-level physics, with somewhat stronger preparation in classical and statistical mechanics than in electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. Students rated the required graduate curriculum as providing reasonably strong preparation for the Prelim Exam, and their highest rating was for their expected readiness to begin PhD research after completing the required coursework and passing the exam. Overall, the results suggest that graduate training helps strengthen students’ confidence as they transition from coursework toward independent research.
Early survey responses from the Stat Mech:Phase Transitions Study Group, consisting of more senior graduate students who passed the preliminary exam, suggest that participants entered the phase-transitions study group with relatively modest preparation in phase transitions, emergent phenomena, and research-oriented condensed-matter physics. At the same time, the participating students viewed the study group positively. Interest in future modules was particularly strong, while responses also highlighted limited hands-on exposure to modern condensed-matter experiments in formal coursework. Overall, the survey indicates both a clear need for research-connected educational opportunities and strong student enthusiasm for continuing the program.
